Same Eyes
A downloadable Zine
In September 2021, the first season of Star Wars: Visions was released. The anthology series featured nine animated shorts from seven Japanese animation studios, each one exploring the themes and visuals that have made the Star Wars franchise one of the most enduring in popular culture.
Since these projects were explicitly created in a state of nebulous canonicity, with no fidelity to a specific timeline or continuity required, watching the series was a unique experience. Differentiated from the Easter egg hunts and cameo-heavy scenes that have gained prominence in many of the major media franchises of the century, Visions considers what exactly grabbed people about Star Wars in the first place, before these planets and characters became so familiar to us.
Same Eyes was created with the goal of answering that same question from within a fan community, absent the requirements a producer might impose. The fanzine was pitched to focus on “alternative interpretations that subvert, challenge, or mend the concepts presented by the canon”, drawing its title from The Force Awakens‘ character Maz Kanata’s statement that “if you live long enough, you see the same eyes in different people”. Some of the pieces in this collection feature grand battles or stunning visualizations of the power of the Force. Others give weight and life to the vast multitudes of ordinary people populating the Galaxy Far, Far Away. Each work urges you, reader, to look through this familiar world through a new set of eyes, and remember what it is about what you saw the first time that drew you in and brought you here.
